For various reasons I have revised the plan, making it even simpler than before. The layout will consist of a simple straight shelf section, instead of being L shaped as planned. I guess I am still a little intimidated by myself having to give up on the "individual tie plates" approach and want to keep this next project as simple as possible. So here is what it will look like.
It will be a oval with a siding for meets, and some hidden staging tracks behind a mountain crest. As said before - designed for rail fanning and nothing else. The relatively tight curves are hidden inside tunnels. The other leg of the original L shape might easily be added later (as indicated by the dotted track that runs "off shelf"). The shelf dimensions are partly given by the available space, but also by the dimensions of a standard plywood sheet. So for reasons that will be revealed in future posts, the shelf will actually be 341 centimeters long (and not 330 as stated in the figure above).
Next time I post anything here I hope to have pictures showing some real progress.

In our new home I will have a corner about 330 cm x 180 cm (11 ft x 6 ft) at my disposal for a new layout. I have made a first attempt at a track plan. It will be the Tehachapi tunnels again. That was the purpose of the previous layout and since I did not get to finish that one I want to do give it a second try.
And built for railfanning - I want to see trains pass. Here is the plan.
It is very simplistic. Two stretches of main line between some tunnels. And behind the scenery a few staging tracks. In this way I can focus on the track and the landscape surrounding it, and get a nice setup for some nice looking trains.
I can't wait! But have to. It is not yet time to move, and when we do I'll probably be busy getting other stuff up and running before I can turn my attention to the layout.

We have bought ourselves a new home, and will be moving sometime later this autumn. So the current layout has to come down. What will come in its place I do not know. I am not even yet sure of how much space I'll have at my disposal. Hopefully more than the tiny area I have today ;-)
In a way it is a blessing that I have to start all over. As you might have have read in my previous post I was not sure how to proceed with the current layout. Now I will be given the opportunity to rethink everything from scratch. But I see now reason to not continue modeling SP in N scale.

As you might have noticed nothing much has happened on the layout lately. This for a number of reasons, one being the fact I have tired of glueing tie plates and building turnouts in the way I have described in earlier posts. Although the result might be visually pleasing I have come to doubt the reliability and smooth operation of the resulting track work (turnouts). And it all takes a lot of time and effort.
So right now I am considering various options to get out of this situation, where I seem to do nothing construtive at all.
- Finish the layout as planned but using flex track and commercial turnouts for the remaining track work
- As above but hand-lay the turnouts using a more standard way (PCB ties)
- Start all over with another track plan, but still SP on the Tehachapis.
In the mean time I went out to the layout room and shot a few pictures, just to keep my spirits up (I must admit I like what I have so far).

Disregarding the fact that the "cupboard" is very small, which severely limits my track plan options, the one big issue about my current track plan are the tight curves leading in and out of staging. I need something close to 20 cm (less than 8") radius curves and turnouts more or less at the same spot.
But I think I have found the solution: Mini-Trix R1/R2 curved turnouts. Very unrealistic, but as said before, they will not be visible and ought to do the trick.
Since these turnouts, and the tight curves, are crucial to the whole track plan I have ordered 2 left-hand and 2 right-hand turnouts. Just to get them early and avoid any late surprises.
